The technology
Infra-red radiation is emitted by all objects with a temperature above Absolute Zero (-273 degrees Celsius) and is measured in nanometres. Each is split into three 'bandwidths' with the term used for this being referred to as emissivity. The term 'thermal' is derived from the fact the amount of infra-red radiation given off increases with temperature. What this means is that a cold surface will be seen differently to a warm blooded individual or hotter surface, for example.
Furthermore, depending on the type of materials, surface, surface roughness and shape, this will also influence the differences. In this instance, steel would have a different emissivity to cotton or human skin for example.
An important thing to remember is that imaging cannot see through materials that the human eye would be able to due to the fact emissions are given off by the surface of an object. Here, a window is a great example. While we as humans can see through a window, a thermal device is only capable of seeing the emissions given off by the panes of glass itself.
Using a Germanium lens- a specific type of lens- a thermal camera uses this lens to reflect visible and ultraviolet light, allowing only the infra-red through. Looking at more detail in terms of what happens at this point is explained here. |
