The growth in Thermal Technology

With the increase in thermal imaging which gives cameras the ability to monitor through limited or zero visibility environments, cameras in 2017 don't just 'see'- they 'visualise' as they intelligently translate infra-red radiation into pictures. Capable of monitoring through a range of environments including fog, darkness or rain, for example, thermal imaging cameras tick all of the boxes when it comes to one of the most exciting technologies in the security industry.

Introduction

Discovered in 1800 by Sir William Herschel as a form of radiation beyond red light, infra-red (literally ‘below red’ in the colour spectrum) now witnesses a wide range of applications for this technology. From allergy detection to detecting leaks in industrial piping, infrared technology applications are very varied nowadays.

Applications
Infra-red technology can be used to detect fires, and more specifically to help fire-fighters to find the core of a fire. Unlike a visual camera which would be blocked by the smoke of a fire, a thermal imaging camera can show where the hottest part of the fire is. By knowing such important details it is possible to reduce the threat of fire for those entering the building.

Within the fire and security industry, thermal technology has a widespread use and provides many benefits which daylight cameras cannot. Working without any illumination for detection, thermal imaging requires no expensive light installations. Furthermore, unlike traditional CCTV cameras, thermal imaging technology works with longer more detection ranges, meaning installation costs are reduced as less cameras and poles are required.

Within the perimeter security sector, thermal cameras can be used to great effect even in the darkest areas that traditional cameras cannot see. Capable of picking up movement and providing insights on vehicles, objects and intruders, thermal imaging cameras are extremely useful for areas such as airports, facilities and critical infrastructure.
